Press Release

Ten wood block prints, created by Sandy Walker in 2005/2006 and concerning the human condition were released in July 2006. Walker investigates relationships between humans through his drawing, capturing figures in a dynamic instant.

Through a long history of involvement with woodblock printing, Walker has translated his drawing style into a form unique to the woodblock media. Using the nature of wood, it's qualities of splintering, and the clarity of carved forms, Walker further defines and changes the spontaneous drawings into long considered images of the human body, bodies moving in space, bodies in relationship to each other, bodies expressing psychic and psychological states and tensions.

He does all this with only black ink and the white of the paper - the simplest of woodblock means - and in a style of drawing that verges on the abstract.

All the prints are carved from plywood and vary in size between 47" and 60", horizontally and vertically. They are printed on Kozo paper in one run through the press after extensive hand inking. The woodblocks are hand-carved by the artist in his studio in Oakland, California, and printed in St Louis by printer Romi Sloboda at Peter Marcusıs studio and by printer Amanda Verbeck at Pele Prints.

Numbers 1, 3, 4, 6 and 10 are printed in editions of 5. And numbers 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 are printed in editions of ten. All the prints are published by the artist. Please contact Sandy for more details.
